Gorgeous Day

Unbelievable! It hit 70° today and all the snow in my yard is finally melting. Around noon I drove into town about 10 miles away. It was probably in the low 60′s at that time. Now you can’t drive far in Michigan without driving around lakes since they’re everywhere. This particular road I drive all the time winds around a beautiful little lake. There are million dollar homes lakefront and along with smaller ones and even some older cottages. In the summer the lake is busy with boaters and other water sports. In the winter once it’s frozen you see the ice fisherman come out and the little huts scattered across the lake. Lately though I’ve noticed the huts are coming down since the ice has begun melting.

Much to my surprise as I was driving past the lake I saw 2 men half way out ice fishing! Sitting on a bucket in the middle of the lake. I slow down and look at the shoreline and sure enough ice is melting. This melting just didn’t start today it’s been going on for a good week or more. I had to wonder how they even got out that far? Of course I’m thinking idiots, the type you hear later on the news that evening, “ice broke away, 2 fishermen stranded are rescued”.  I keep driving and didn’t pay it much thought figuring with the warm weather they would soon be getting back to shore.

Several hours later, it was after 3:00 because I was behind school buses I’m on my way back home which takes me on the lake road again. By now it’s 70° and absolutely gorgeous here! I notice several cars pulled into the little parking area where the boat dock is located. People stopped and parked just to sit by the lake and enjoy the sunny day and look in amazement at the 2 IDIOTS still out there! I could not believe my eyes, the 2 guys were still in the same spot, still fishing while ice is melting by the minute at the shoreline. I slow down and stare in utter amazement wondering how they will get back to shore?

Every year this happens here in Michigan and I’m sure all the other northern states with an abundance of lakes. Ice fishermen getting stranded and needing to be rescued. On the big lakes usually the Coast Guard is called in and does the rescuing but not on the smaller lakes like the kind I am talking about. That’s done by the local rescue units often putting their own life in danger. I hope the two guys I saw out there today made it off safely. Would hate to hear about them on the local news tonight.

Oh my! Kinda makes ya wonder if the ice had gone to their heads!
I’m so glad you were able to enjoy the sun today and I hope you wake up to a non-frozen lake tomorrow. ;) (preferably without any fisherman bobbing around)

Very glad that your weather’s turning nice… the winter’s tough. Hope the ice guys got home safe and dry. Over here in Hamburg, it’s in the upper 50′s, and there are even patches of blue!A delight. Is winter finally over???

Reminds me of those that hike to the top of Mt. Everest and then expect someone to rescue them. Some people just don’t think.
Spring is teasing here this week but expected to turn cold again. :(

Hi Elaine, I really liked that post. You did a great job. The weather was really nice too on the same day, and I am telling that ice fishing is risky business when it’s melting like this. It always scared me. Good luck with your new adventure. Luv, Pauline

    Hi Elaine,
So glad your Winter is starting to thaw out. Of course, here in Arizona, we are already flirting with 90 – 100 degree temperatures. My idea of a perfect day weather wise is any day where you CANT fry ‘Eggbeaters’ on the sidewalk at 10 AM… Be well my friend!

Hi Eaine, thanks for stopping by and letting me know about your new blog, I actually did the same myself a while back but couldn’t get a look and feel I liked ~ can I ask what software you’re using? because I like this a lot. I used serendipity for a while but gave up trying to get it how I wanted it! I hope you’re well and it’s good to hear from you..
    Regards,
    Rich.
