You asked about the hostas.. it's hard to kill a hosta. I used to mow mine down after they'd turned ugly in late summer and they still come back big and beautiful every year. You can cut back them back after they die down and they'll be fine. I've noticed that mine aren't coming out at all yet and I wonder if it's because I moved them to the shadier area.
