Is It Spring?

What about Spring? Is it the 20th or 21st? The spring countdown that I’ve been changing daily is assuming Spring arrives the 21st. Then today while watching the news I heard several weather reporters saying tomorrow (20th) is the first day of spring. OK, so then I ‘google‘ and find the results are split between the 20th and the 21st. So I don’t know what day spring officially arrives this year. I will change my countdown to Happy Spring and let you all decide.

From googling ( I love this new verb)

First Day of Spring
Spring Equinox

March (3/20/06, 3/21/07, 3/20/08, 3/20/09, 3/20/10, 3/20/11, 3/20/12, 3/20/13, 3/20/14, 3/20/15, 3/20/16, 3/20/17, 3/20/18, 3/20/19, 3/20/20)

Far from being an arbitrary indicator of the changing seasons, March 20 (March 21 in some years) is significant for astronomical reasons. On March 20, 2007, at precisely 8:07 P.M. EDT (March 21, 00:07 Universal Time), the Sun will cross directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

My guess it is the 20th for us. And that the talk or reference by some of the 21st is because of the vernal equinox occuring at minutes into the 21st on Greewich Mean Time.

Ditto with Nooner on the vernal equinox. Your site is lovely Elaine! I am so thankful that the spring pollens aren’t as bad here, as in Virginia, and that it does make some difference. Praying for your continued health!

    Love and Hugs,
    Beth

8:07 this evening? Then it’s egg standing time! For those that don’t know about this little phenomenon, during the moment of the vernal equinox you can stand a raw egg on it’s pointy end and, if your patient, it will stay there. Don’t worry, you probably have about a half hour to stand as many eggs as you can.

Last year my wife and I sot five to stand on their pointy bottoms. The others had too many bumps.

  4. Kirk M says:

Correction please. The eggs stand on the wider bottom not the pointy end. Sorry about that, I’ve been under the weather and all :P

    Happy egg standing all.

When I can finally stash my down jacket, it’s spring! Wishing you sunshine, blue skies and mild temps!

  6. Kimmy says:

I had the darnedest time trying to figure this out myself! I finally went with the 21st because I found more *google* hits with 21 then 20 but like you, I keep seeing/hearing that today is the 1st day of Spring now.
Oh well whatever the case..Happy Spring!!!
*waves bye to all of Elaine’s snow* :D

  7. Marilyn says:

    Elaine,
I love your new web page. Yes, I did check the pollen count for today in my area. It is 6.7 medium. Glad my oldest daughter is in Illinois or her Asthma would surely be bothering her. That’s the main reason she moved back up there.
I will be back to read further and to keep up with you.
    God bless you my friend:)~HUGS~Marilyn~

  8. Tom says:

    Hi Elaine !!!
Well all i can say is spring is not here yet.
    But hope it comes soon……
Hope your week is going well so far.
    Take care my dear friend.

  9. Kimmy says:

Don’t worry Elaine..it’ll all be green and lush soon! With Spring comes tornado season for us so it’s a oxymoron of sorts. Gotta take the good with the bad I suppose.
