Remember that cracked tooth and subsequent crown that happened a couple of weeks ago? I went for the permanent crown last week and since there were several indicators there was nerve damage the dentist put the crown on with temporary cement. Just in case I needed a root canal. Well I didn’t even make it through the weekend…I knew I was in trouble! Left side of my face tingly and creepy crawler feeling (from the nerve) pain, you get the picture. Meanwhile I am freaking out because I leave the country this week and this must be resolved. So in I go yesterday for an emergency root canal, my very first! And I hope my last!
“Do you want gas?” (are you kidding me? I don’t want to feel any of this!)
Honestly it wasn’t all that bad except for the massive amount of novacaine, which took about 8 hours to wear off. When it was all over we discuss medications.
“Do you want vicodin or motrin 800′s? (dentist)
“Never had a vicodin in my life, though I pass them out like candy in the hospital, people seem to like them”. (me)
So he writes out the prescription….for both and antibiotics. Guess he was expecting me to feel pretty bad. Have to admit last night was not pleasant when the novacaine started wearing off. So at bedtime I cut the pill in half (wimpy me) and took my very first vicodin. Can’t see what the big deal is about this drug, I went to sleep and got up this morning feeling fine. The left side of my mouth a little tender but nothing an ordinary advil can’t take care of. I think I have a high tolerance for pain.
So now I have 2 bottles of my first ever pain pills which I don’t need. Guess I’ll hang on to them just in case though. Probably a good idea to bring a few with me too.
Crunch time now….a lot to get done before I leave on Thursday. Let’s hope this tooth behaves. To be on the safe side think I’ll take another half tonight.

Well I’m glad to hear that the pain went away, for the most part! My doc prescribed me some painkillers last fall when I had about 1/2 inch of a sewing needle in my toe, it had broken off. Ouchie did that hurt!! I didn’t like taking those meds, either. And I have 2 bottles still, almost completely full. Those things come in handy for migraines though!!

Oh ouch, I have had several root canals. So not fun… but at least the technology for doing them is better now. Doesn’t take as long as it used to. I do not like taking pain pills either, if I do have to take something for a lot of pain, the doctor told me to take 2 advil and 2 tylenol because they are different types of pain relievers and will have a T3 effect. Works too! I hope you have a safe trip and the tooth doesn’t bother you for long. I haven’t been to see you in a while… umm, silly me I couldn’t remember how to get here?? Duh, it was right there on my space.. haha! Take care of yourself. -S-
