This has not been the greatest week thus far. I should have seen that forewarning on Sunday morning when I was so rudely awakened. How’s that expression go? “When life serves you lemons, make lemonade.” Well I think I am way past lemonade. This one is more appropriate, “when life serves you lemons, ask for Tequila and salt.” As my dear departed Mother-in-law use to say, “no use complaining”. Ok I’m trying.
Now back to blogging. Mary Anne made a good comment on the trans fats topic pertaining to tainted Chinese food imports. If you care to read a more in depth report here is a recent article in the Washington Post. Last month alone 1,000 shipments of tainted Chinese dietary supplements, toxic cosmetics and counterfeit medicines were detained. Well China is in the news again, this time for toothpaste that may contain the Industrial solvent diethylene glycol. That’s an ingredient used in antifreeze.
Tainted toothpaste believed to be from China has been found in Australia, the Dominican Republic and Panama, but has not been found in the United States, The New York Times reported.
Diethylene glycol in cold medicine killed at least 100 people in Panama last year. There have been no reports of deaths linked to the tainted toothpaste.
Chinese authorities have closed the factory of the Danyang City Success Household Chemical Company and have questioned the manager of the another toothpaste maker called Goldcredit International Trading, the Times reported.

The last 2 days the United States and China have been in high level economic talks. Certainly the American delegation addressed the topic of food safety in lieu of the melamine-tainted food recall last month. We can only hope they were listening! Like Mary Anne said, watch what you’re buying folks and know where it’s coming from.

Hi Elaine, who are we going to trust now, it’s always something, now the toothpaste. Maybe we will have to go back to old baking soda. Lol. Take care, luv, Pauline
Ugh. The whole thing has been very discouraging.
Good grief! Toothpaste?? Looooovely.
Hope you’re having a good Thursday!

Hey there,

Pauline- I just heard on the news this morning there is now a recall on frozen monkfish making people very sick. It’s from China also.
Laoch- yes it is discouraging. The safety of food imports be it for our pets or ourselves seems so basic. Yet it’s proving not to be.
Carrie- thanks and enjoy the long weekend
China= Bad Vibes.. I wish we didn’t have to depend on China for a dang thing!
Hello Elaine,
We try to purchase as much as possible from the States and Canada, then from Europe and Australia. Some Chinese products aren’t bad, and can save you money, but we pick and chose carefully, or do without.
Too much reliance on goods from China has been a concern to me anyway. Why would I trust the products from a country that abuses the rights of its own people? If consumers insist on better products maybe our governments will step up to the plate for wise foreign trade.

Kimmy – I hear ya, alot of us wishing the same thing!
Beth – I hope so, our governments certainly have to make sure the food products they allow in our countries are safe for human consumption.
