GOP Warns Bush

From the Washington Post today:

House Republican moderates, in a remarkably blunt White House meeting, warned President Bush this week that his pursuit of the war in Iraq is risking the future of the Republican Party and that he cannot count on GOP support for many more months.

Question is will it do any good? President Bush doesn’t seem to be listening to the American People, we can only hope he listens to his own party!

Statistics from the Department of Defense as of Wednesday morning. US death toll 3,365 US servicemembers and 7 Defense Department civilians have died in the Iraq war.

Well, I will first say that there is hardly anything that George Bush does that I agree with… I will say this, though, and maybe others would have ideas or input about it….

Okay, we’re in this war with Iraq. Things over there aren’t going well. Our men are dying over there constantly. It is sad, and I really hope we get out of there soon.

    Here’s my worry, though:

What George Bush said the other day about his veto on taking our troops out. He said something to the effect that WHY should we pass a bill to take our troops out and announce to our enemies the exact date we are going to do this?

I have to say here that I agree with him 100%…. We shouldn’t announce to the world when we plan on pulling out……. That would be stupid!

Secondly, I worry…. When American troops were pulled out of Vietnam, there were men who would grab onto helicopters and hold on for their lives just to get out of there, because being the last of only a few troops left in a war zone would NOT be a good thing…… If we start pulling troops out of Iraq, we are doing the same thing to many of our soldiers. We’ll be taking them out a few at a time…… The less troops we have over there, the more dangerous it is for the few that remain…… As much as I hate this war, I think there has to be a better way or plan for getting our troops all out safely…… How can we do that without endangering the last ones who get out????

Before I was a Mom I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
    I never thought about immunization.
Before I was a Mom – I had never been puked on. Pooped on. Chewed on, Wet on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
    I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests. Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t
    Want to put them down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom – I didn’t know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn’t know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom – I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.
Send this to someone who you think is a special Mom. I just did! This says it all! I also leave you this with love:
    Enjoy your special day! ~~Hugs~~

My concern about the issue is much like Julie’s. I was for it, as long as the leadership put the troops first, and not political correctness. If they had let the soldiers fight the terrorists in mosques, killing the leaders, and full steam ahead, they would have won a great stronghold. There is no better military if you let them do their job. I am not for cut and run and you can be sure terrorists would consider that a weakness. It would have set a different tone for training Iraqi troops and cut down on the successes of the other side. I don’t think you could realistically say it would have totally stopped it. The sad thing is, that they have done much good in helping most of Iraq, especially the northern people, but the news rarely shows the good that is done. I have a hard time understanding why republicans think they should act like the democrats. It is difficult to tell the difference between the parties, whether in spending, or anything else. I don’t think Americans do want them to cut and run. I think they are disgusted that Republicans aren’t acting like conservatives any more. Why vote them in when they don’t stick to party principles, but put their finger in the wind, for what they think people want.

It saddens me everytime I think of how much American money is being spent on a foreign country and we still have homeless and hungry people in our country. I believe in helping those in need, but when do we start helping our own?

We’re selling our National Parks because we can’t afford them. What’s wrong with this picture?

  7. Bill says:

I agree with Darla wholeheartedly, and also that the troops need to get out of there. This was a failure from the beginning, and Bush will NEVER get it.

  8. It’s a tad late to be concerned about the party. The troops are there and the job in not finished. American prestige cannot afford a chaotic Iraqi pull out. Perhaps the best option would be one that satisfies moderate Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike.
Continued military presence in the region is necessary on condition that it supports several objectives.

To continue training Iraqi security forces, to continue the fight against international terrorism, to continue providing logistical support to Iraqi forces, to provide effective border security and to have in place a rapid response if circumstances compromise the above objectives, (such a force can be located within the region), and lastly, to engage in effective consultations with Iraq’s neighbors principally to address the instabilities imposed by Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

To meet such objectives would mean anywhere up to 80,000 U.S. military personnel remaining within the region being about half the number there now.

I would add however, that any altered stratagem be an adjunct to genuinely constructive political engagement with all players within the Middle East insofar as this may be possible.
