Why Risk It?

I’ve long been a staunch believer of NO SOFT DRINKS THEY ARE NOT GOOD FOR US!  Even managed to raise 2 children both now in their late 20′s and they grew up with no soda/pop in the house. Imagine that.  My poor deprived children both of whom grew up to be slim healthy adults.

There have been numerous reports about the effects of soda contributing to childhood and adult obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Of course the soft drink industry wants to tell us otherwise.  Another report out today confirming what we SHOULD already know, soft drinks are bad for our health.  You decide for yourself.  Read the report here.

Poco update – his ears are up!  No more floppy puppy ears. Will try to post a picture this week. Every time I try to take the picture he runs to the camera instead of sitting still. He is 10 weeks old today and doing well. Airport run for me tomorrow. Should be interesting, he has not seen the male of the household for 2 weeks.  He is use to my undivided attention which is about to change.  Hope everyone is having a good week.

    Elaine,

How do I get updates of your blogs regularly, without having to check the Notify me box, on just a particular blog, which just updates me on that blog. I saved you to favorites but don’t always think to check there, either.

Poco is just too adorable and makes me want to have a puppy. After cleaning up behind 4 cats and a lizard…I come to my senses.

My children were allowed to have soda pop occasionally… but I didn’t buy it regularly. Neither of them are overweight. I do think that the BIGGER problem is parents letting their children sit in front of a television, whether for shows or video games, allowing it to be the babysitter. My children kept active because I wouldn’t allow them to do otherwise. We went to parks, rode bikes, went swimming, went for nature walks, and played games in the yard. They were signed up for sports activities that they liked, as well. We couldn’t afford too many of those, but it all added up to them being active, and enjoying it, as part of their lifestyle. Moderation seems to be the key with most things.

Hope you are having a beautiful summer Elaine! Love and hugs,

    Beth

Love the new look. I checked out that photographer’s work, and there are a lot of great ones. Thanks for sharing. :)

As far as soft drinks go, I agree they are not good for you. I was actually raised in a home without soft drinks. My problem was that when I grew up, I wanted to eat all the sugar that I always missed out on… Now I’m regretting that, though…

Hope you’re able to take pics of Poco, soon. Would love to see how he’s growing. Hope things go well with your husband being home. Poco might go into shock when he finds out he’s not your only man LOL…

    Take care! :)

PS. Did the email updates stop working? I didn’t get this in my email…

Nice to see the puppy doing well.

First time here, header is lovely. Technu is a product for preventing poison ivy after exposure. We used it when we lived in Texas after we played at the ranch. According to your map, New Mexico doesn’t have the plant, hurray.

My mother never had soft drinks, nor did I with my three children although only one avoids sodas now.

Beth – sent you an email with directions for subscribing. I do agree with your comment about children today and activity level. That seems to be a huge problem and certainly contributes to childhood obesity that we now see.

Julie – thanks for stopping in, I know you’re busy with classes and all. The updates should work but like any service it may be “down” every now and then. If you don’t start getting them please let me know and I will look into it with Feedburner.

Laoch – thanks! Hope to get a new picture up soon :-)

Mother Pie – thanks for stopping in, always nice to hear from a new visitor. I never heard of Technu, thanks for the tip though! Both my children react very badly to poison ivy, would be useful to them.

*waves to Poco and Elaine* Poor baby’s gonna have to share momma for a few days! I can’t wait to see those little ears up.

Just wanted to say that I enjoyed the soda report link. Very interesting. I’ve always discouraged it here too, even when the kids were small. #1 – I just felt that it wasn’t good for them. #2 – I hated that the way they would waste it. #3 – those darn empties that needed to be returned were the biggest nuisance of all. Fortunately, I had milk lovers which helped. ;-)

Say hi to Poco for me. lol

Elaine thanks for writing about yet another recalled food, so many things have showed up now that recalls are becoming the norm, it is almost like terrorist or someone is purposly tainting our foods whether fresh veggies or packaged, most all the food I eat is started from schrach however when it comes to fresh veggies it is all up to the FDA if the food is good or not, ( PS: we do not get that brand of food here in Canada) but we do get a lot of chinese imports, garlic et al, which here in Canada they have to tell you where a food is from and there are just some countries that I will not buy from if it goes anywhere near my mouth.

well I grew up many years ago and we were allowed soft drinks as a special treat not a daily thing like it is now days, even when my kids were small they were allowed the odd soft drinks now and then even though by that time we were able to buy frozen fruit juice ( which by the way there did not have when I was growing up, what they did have were hand run juicers and made your own when the fruit was in season) , also I may add at both times when I was growing up and my kids were growing up you could allow your kids to go out side and play with their freinds with out having to be out there with them all the time, not like now days where you cannot let your kids out of your sight and it is only getting worse, who knows where it will stop, perhaps when they start taking some of our tax dollars and build a few more jails and the judges give out harsharer sentences to fit the crime, ( nothing says that prisioners have to have all the recreation they are given now days or all the best home made meals, Steak et,al.they receive) they are there to be punished not rewarded, gee I am going on and on about both Canada and the USA so I will stop about here as you all know the horrors that are going on now days.

    mary-anne,

now that is a whole nother issue, but I agree. How wonderful it would be to let your kids go out and play and not have to worry about someone nabbing them, or who knows what. I live in a small rural community, but even here there is a registered sex offender that lives on my street. It stresses me to no end at times. I have to agree with harsher crimes and longer sentences (WITHOUT THE STEAKS!)… It seems like there are more laws and loop holes for the bad guys than there are to protect the innocent! Sorry, guess you struck a chord in me…

    Elaine,

How is Poco doing? Thanks for getting back to me and I did put myself down for your email subscription. It seems to be working. =)
    Love and hugs,

    Beth

Kimmy – will try to update the blog with a picture today or tomorrow ;-)

Janet – my kids were milk lovers too, I hear ya about the empties, nasty taking them back.

Mary Anne – good to see you and it’s fine, go on as much as you want about the US and Canada. Both countries share some of the same problems! And it just continues to get worse as they allow more people in (legal or illegal). And we are left footing the bill. Don’t even get me going on this one ;-)

Julie – I don’t blame you, I would be so upset to have a registered sex offender on my street! And yes you’re right, it does seem the laws are on the side of the criminals, not the law abiding citizens.

Beth – Poco is doing great! Will get a pic up shortly. Glad the email subscriptions are working for you!

Wasn’t it around the turn of the century that Coca-Cola was actually made with cocaine particulates? (The drink was a syrup not like today…)

SO much of what we eat, drink and otherwise put in our mouths is tainted with additives that the whole U.S. food supply is teaming with things we really wouldn’t eat if we only could resist.

I’ve tried to change the pop habit, but they got to me early.

I like/love Tea. Any recommended brands or outlets you use for tea purchases?

  13. Elaine says:

Jason – I believe you are correct about the old Coca-Cola, pretty amazing huh? Sorry I can’t help you with the tea recommendations. I only drink it when I have an awful cold (usually in the winter) and it seems to soothe a sore throat. About the pop habit, have you tried just cutting back? Or replace it with water? The pop habit really is addictive and not an easy one to break. Good Luck!
