Saturday Thoughts

The end of summer brings cooler temps and a lead into my favorite season, autumn. It also ushers in ragweed season which is in full swing throughout much of the country. I truly am blessed with good health other than my miserable allergies each spring and fall. Lucky for me and the million others there are much better medications than when I was growing up. Allegra-D and Singulair is the combination that works for me. My Doctor will only give me so many refills without being seen in the office and my appointment was this week. I hadn’t seen him for a year so I knew in advance don’t eat, get blood drawn etc. But that certainly didn’t stop me from drinking a couple cups of coffee before I head out the door. Not a good thing to do since caffeine and NO FOOD had my heart racing like a mouse on a treadmill. I told him it was the coffee……..”well it probably is but lets get an EKG since you haven’t had one since I’ve been seeing you”. So EKG, blood drawn, and pneumonia vaccine given (OUCH!) I finally get out of there with my prescriptions and a clean bill of health for someone with chronic allergies, or should I say under control?  Don’t think I’ll be drinking coffee next time around.

Most Ridiculous Story of the week….the story of the young blonde 23 year old college student escorted off a Southwest Flight for inappropriate attire. She  was wearing a white denim miniskirt, high-heel sandals, and a turquoise summer sweater over a tank top over a bra. She was flying from one desert climate to another, Tucson where it had been in the 100′s all week.

Southwest explained its treatment of Ebbert in a letter to her mother, saying it could remove any passenger ?whose clothing is lewd, obscene or patently offensive? to ensure the comfort of children and ?adults with heightened sensitivities.?

Now I don’t know if you do much flying or not but I would rather sit next to her any day compared to some of the people I’ve shared my row with! I’ve sat next to people who smelled, ate stinky food, got crumbs all over my seat as well as their own when they brushed them off, and the worst people who wanted to use half my seat as well as their own.  Is this outfit lewd, obscene and offensive? I don’t think it was a man who thought so ;-)

Story to make you smile …. the 10 year old female Chihuahua nurses  motherless baby squirrels as if they were her own.  Derek Varnes who works for a tree trimming service found the nest of baby squirrels on a downed limb. Knowing they would die if left alone he took them home to his fiancee’s mother.

“My 10-year-old Chihuahua would come and watch me and start whining and carrying on,” Young said. “I thought she was going to eat them. She said when she eventually put the squirrels down, Mimi started licking them to clean them and then began nursing them. Young said although Mimi’s last litter was born four years ago, the dog is still able to make enough milk to keep the baby squirrels full. Mimi doesn’t venture far from her new little ones.

The babies and Mimi are doing well. Click on source below, it is a cute video.

    Elaine,

Good to read you have a clean bill of health, other than the troublesome allergies, and that you are armed with meds that help!

I’ve been having problems in different areas, and was supposed to get blood work done last week, but felt too bad to go in, so will be going in this week instead. Like you, my seasonal allergies are under control, but there are diffulties with my asthma related issues because of dust mites, mold, and my low peak flow readings. We will need to get rid of carpeting, but can’t yet afford the wood flooring, and will just have to wait till we can.

My doctors advised me some years back to NOT get the flu shots because of my immune system being so repressed. I have no problem heeding that advice…lol.

Thank you for the link to the video about the baby squirrels! Enjoyed it tremendously.

How silly to keep that woman off of the flight. Even if my opinion is that her skirt was a tad short…she still carried herself better than the guys wearing their pants off of their hips so that you see almost all their underwear…which looks so slovenly. I can’t imagine a male having a problem with here attire, either…lol.

I have also had problems with people spreading themselves out into my seating area on a plane. One man… smelled terrible… and leaned into me… from his arm and elbow…right into my chest, and then from his leg position against mine. I pushed him off of me…but was too polite to say more than “move please” which he barely did. I have promised myself that if it ever got even close to happening again…I would give a lecture on my paying for my seating area… and if the person didn’t like it…I would call the steward or stewardess.

Going to look at your latest pictures now. Hope you have a great week, Elaine!

    Love and hugs,
    Beth

A most excellent post! I read the source of that story about the girl and it sounds like that attendant “Keith” had a bit of a problem. No one else seemed to think her attire inappropriate. That was going a bit too far I believe.

I haven’t seen the video yet but I will as soon as I publish my next post.

And by the way…I use Clariton or the genetic equivalent thereof. It seems to work.

Interesting stuff. Do you find the allegra sedating at all?

  4. Gino says:

Last week I flew on Southwest Airlines. While waiting at the gate, I heard a baby screaming, paid no attention to it until I heard a couple say I hope that baby is not on our flight again. Alarm bells went off, since it is open seating I wanted to be sure where the screaming baby was sitting since they were boarding the plane first. Now, we had kids and we took them on airplanes and I do understand they can get upset but I have been on enough flights to know that some parents have no control at all. I can tell a baby’s scream because it may be sick or from air pressure but this was an attitude scream! This baby was about 18 months old and it SCREAMED pretty much the whole flight! I have never been on a flight that a child screamed that long and that hard. Flight attendants didn’t say a word. I can say for certain that everybody on that plane became irritated but most like myself knew in was only a hour flight.
    Dear Southwest,
If you are going to screen, please I don’t find the lady offensive but I do find offensive very excessive screaming babies that parents can’t control.

    Hi Elaine,

Sorry you suffer from allergies. I have no idea what that is like. It is a wonder to me why some people are affected to the environment and others are not.

Since you have a keen interest in medical issues…
A week ago I started on a medication, Finasteride, a treatment for prostate enlargement. As an antiandrogen, it has a cause of reducing a male hormone. I think I have noticed a Side Effect that my physician failed to warn me about: Last night I watched my 3rd Chick Flick in less than a week! HaHaHa. The Wedding Date, a romantic comedy.

Beth – sorry to hear you’re still having problems with your asthma. Once the leaves start falling and the mold counts go up is normally when I run into problems. Fall is such a pretty season but so hard on those with related allergies. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Kirk – agree…..Southwest went way TOO far in my opinion. I tried Claritin too when it first came out. Think I’ve been on most of them at one time or other.

Laoch – maybe when I first started the allegra I found it sedating but that didn’t last for long. Keep in mind I have been on allergy medications for years so my body has adjusted. Wish I didn’t have to take this stuff though :(

    Gino
    – well this is the first time I’ve ever heard you complain about a screaming kid on a flight so it must have been pretty bad. Of all the problems with the airlines nowadays pretty amazing that Southwest singled out this girl.

Nooner – ahh the joys of mid life, BPH for the men, menopause for the women. Thank God for all the great medications we have at our disposal for treating these conditions.

  7. Ottavio says:

    Greetings Elaine,
My wife and nine-year boy succumb to terrible hay fever each spring. It affects not just the nasal passages but also (and especially), their eyes.

We control the symptoms with zyrtec® (brand name in Australia) (cetirizine HCl 5 mg and 10 mg), which you may be familiar with.

Unless one suffers from allergies, it is impossible to understand how debilitating they can be.

    Kind regards Ottavio

  8. Janet says:

Hope everyone fares well this fall season with the help of their medications.
Loved the baby squirrel story. It was heartwarming. Can’t help but wonder though what they will do once they’ve grown. Do squirrels need their mother to teach them outdoor survival? Hope they’ll be okay if they’re just let loose at some point.

  9. Elaine says:

Ottavio – I totally sympathize with the eye allergies in the spring! That is absolutely miserable. Has their doctor ever prescribed Patanol eye drops? Another wonder drug (at least for me) in the arsenal of allergy meds. Good luck to your wife and son this spring!

Janet – I wondered the same thing. According to the article and video they have been in contact with a vet so presumably they will be told what to do and when to let them loose.

  10. Jason P. says:

Allergies are becoming a nuisance for me. I never use to have them…since about 27, I have been fighting them –though sometimes I don’t dose anything.

That girl got kicked off a flight? If a guy did it, he’s either:
    1) Gay, and hating it
    2) The girl reminded him of a ex-GF that destroyed his faith in women

Because she would most definitely not be on my kick off list. The crumb-making, baby-crying and seat hogging people would be BIG on my list too.

  11. Pauline says:

Personally, I didn’t think that girl’s clothing was obscene, I see worst than that just walking on the street. I don’t know some people are always find causes to fight, like they are not happy just being quiet. They have to cause trouble all the time. I feel sorry for that poor young woman, being treated like a criminal for wearing cool clothings. Anyway, take good care my dear, and hope little Pauco is fine. Hugs, Pauline

  12. Gino says:

    Elaine,

    Love your new banner!

    Gino

  13. Robert Chiarini says:

Who the hell gave the airlines that power to pass judgment on anyone? Is what she was wearing any worst then shorts,or a halter top?? Must have been some bible thumper with the airlines.
Some people I have seen on planes were down right scary. Don’t know how they were even allowed on the plane.
Come on airlines, give me a break!

    Robert
