Christmas cards for wounded soldiers

Updated Nov. 17, 2008

There is an email circulating encouraging you when making out your Christmas card list,  to address a card to ‘A Wounded Soldier’ and gives the address of  Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC.  Though it sounds like a great idea, it’s not.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind those individuals who want to show their appreciation through mail to include packages and letters, addressed to “Any Wounded Soldier” that Walter Reed will not be accepting these packages in support of the decision by then Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Transportation Policy 2001. This decision was made to ensure the safety and well being of patients and staff at medical centers throughout the Department of Defense.

In addition, the U.S. Postal Service is no longer accepting “Any Service Member” or “Any Wounded Service Member” letters or packages. Mail to “Any Service member” that is is deposited into a collection box will not be delivered.

Instead of sending “Any Wounded Soldier” letter or package to Walter Reed, please consider making a donation to one of the more than 200 nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping our troops and their families listed on the “America Supports You” website, at  www.americasupportsyou.com

Update from Snopes here.  (updated Nov 08)

Other organizations that offer means of showing your support for our troops or assist wounded service members and their families include:

http://www.usocares.org/
http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/tooursoldiers/
http://www.redcross.org

Also look in your local paper under community activities and organizations. Many churches are involved in making care packages for our soldiers during the holiday season.

Please click on the Snopes link above it does tell you how to send gifts to the American Red Cross, Walter Reed Medical Center and what gifts they are accepting.

No matter how you feel about the Iraq war our soldiers do deserve our support and what better way to say you care than including them in your holiday gift list.

  1. Gandalfe says:

Thanks for the heads up Elaine. There are so many lost people out there that I almost feel sorry for them.

  2. A very worthy initiative, I hope that a great many Americans extend support to the troops and wounded members. As in todays quote,
    “to be compassionate…”
Off subject, four children have fallen victim to GHB in the first week of November. Hence, the toys have been pulled off shelves in Australia as well.

  3. Keli says:

Thank you as this is a wonderful idea. My kids usually have done this through their 4-H Club. Definitely a worthy cause.

  4. Mr. Grudge says:

    Hi Elaine,
This is a worthy cause which I will pass along to others. Thanks.

  5. Mary Ellen says:

I got the email of sending the cards a few times, but our church is doing a care package so that is the way I am going. I thank God each day that our son has not yet been deployed.

  6. Kimmy says:

You are so correct..no matter how anyone feels about the war in Iraq, our servicemen deserve so much better. God Bless them all.

Thank you for the comments on Scruffys photo. He’s a nutty cat!

  7. A good idea might be to make contact with the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at your local military installation, National Guard Armory or Reserve center and find out if there are soldiers, sailors, airmen or marines deployed out of the units there, and ask if he would help you in assisting them directly by either providing you with contact information or sending off your letters/cards in bulk for you
    him(or her) self.
This has the added benefit of giving home-town support to these military members, which actually means much more than the card or letter itself in most instances. “Support your local Soldier”.

  8. Greg says:

    Hi Elaine,

Congratulations on the grandbaby. Shhh!!! I’m going to be a grandpa too!!!
I’m like you…Don’t just go out there throwing info for the whole public to see.
But I think I’m safe here.

I love your blog . You keep a nice house don’t ya know.

Plenty of wonderful info and I am glad I finally stopped by again.

Have a super duper Thanksgiving you and your loved ones.

If I ever set next to you on a plane I’ll be quiet unless you ask questions.

Let’s see there was the movie “Snakes On a Plane.”

They could make a new movie, “Snoops On a Plane.”

You all be well. Your bud in Branson, Greg

    Grandalfe – you’re welcome :-)
Ottavio – I did read about the children in your country that were harmed by the aqua dots and it’s hard to fathom how this could happen in 2007! Christmas is going to have many cautious parents when it comes to selecting toys for their children.
Keli - Very worthy cause and good to hear your kids are involved through 4-H Club, a great organization!
    Mr.Grudge – you’re welcome :-)
Mary Ellen – my heart goes out to you, I know you must be worried about your son. Most churches are involved in the packages from home, glad yours is one of them.
    Kimmy – a very cute cat ;-)
SFC John Holloway – thank you so much for stopping in and giving excellent suggestions! I hadn’t even thought of contacting the PAO. I’ll be sure to pass this information on.
    Laoch:)
Greg – always good to hear from you. I am behind on visiting my blogging friends so forgive me. Seems congrats are in order for you too ;-) . Are we really old enough?? Baby boomers becoming grandparents (shhh that sounds old huh?). You have a wonderful Thanksgiving too.

    Hi Elaine,

I had received the Any Wounded Soldier email and never would have thought differently given the legitimacy of the Walter Reed Hospital address. So good to know about the Snopes detailed corrections to what has been circulating.

  11. W. Beth Young says:

    Elaine,

Thank you for the clarification and heads up!
