Did you think I up and disappeared on you? For those that follow my blog you know that I was anxiously awaiting for “the call”. It came on New Year’s Eve around 5:00 saying she had been in labor all day and was heading to the hospital. Well that certainly put hubby and me in fast action, packing up and getting ready to leave. Only hitch was ~~~ we were looking at a massive snowstorm that night. And boy did we get it!!!
By morning the snow was knee deep in the driveway and streets (unplowed) yet we managed to get out. For 8 nail biting hours we battled snow through Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia where we stopped for the night. Woke up to more snow in WV!! Is this snowstorm ever going to end? Once out of WV and into Virginia no more snow! We get into North Carolina early afternoon. Drop our dog off at their house (let their dog out) and head to the hospital.
Now I must tell you I have not been in nor visited a maternity floor in many many years. Has it ever changed! We go into the hospital to the patient information desk. Tell the lady who we are here to visit. She asks if we have been a visitor here before. “No” we reply. She asks for ID’s and we both give her our driver licenses. She takes one and starts typing away on her keyboard. Then she takes the license and puts it in some little scanner thing and asks us (one at a time) to move over to the wall, put our feet on the footprints on the floor, look into the camera and smile at the smiley. Same thing as getting your drivers license photo. Then pops out a visitors pass with picture, name and date good for 24 hours. Up to the maternity floor with double locked doors. Once past there we finally get to my daughter’s room.
She is propped up in bed with baby girl asleep in her arms and hubby next to her and they’re watching a DVD. I finally get to meet and hold my new granddaughter! What a sweetie she is, big eyes, little heart shaped lips, and she has hair! Something her Mother didn’t have unless you consider peach fuzz hair.
I spent the next week in NC and enjoyed every minute of it. My husband flew back to DC to his job and eventually I had to pack up and drive back to Michigan. I’ve been saying goodbye since she went off to college 11 years ago 520 miles from home. From college through medical school and now residency I’ve been traveling and saying goodbye. This time was as difficult as the first. The drive home alone was long and sad. I miss them both.
Though I do not talk about my adult children often in my blog and respect their privacy I do have permission to share this. Welcome to the world Cora Leigh.

Happy news!
Great news, welcome to the world Cora, and congrat’s to all…
Hi! Congratulations on your new granddaughter. I love the idea of becoming a grandfather myself. Even if it reminds me that I am getting on a bit. But that’s life!
As for your new header image, its magic! So crisp, brilliant, clear and so special.
All the best to you and your family – especially your daughter. More baby sitting duties coming up I think! Good Luck! – regards Peter
Elaine,
Congratulations to your family on your new addition, dear little Cora, and I am so glad you had a lovely visit and safe trip both ways. I was right with you on that trip there, going throught the states, as I have travelled them many times myself. It was so sad imagining the trip back home, Elaine, because that is also very familiar to me, on having to leave family behind.
Like you… I am reticent about sharing information on my family without getting permission first…and being especially careful in regards to my grandchildren. If I ever go private on my site… I may add pictures of them then.
I almost went on a tangent about the security you had to go through to see your granddaughter but refrained…lol.
How is little Poco doing?
Love and hugs,
Beth
Hello Elaine!
Though you are safe and sound back home in Michigan, I’m sure you left your heart behind with Cora Leigh and your daughter and son-in-law. Congratulations once again on having such a beautiful granddaughter!
~Nooner~
Cora Leigh is going to love the story of your mad dash over hill and over dale through the snow to be there for her debut. I’ll bet you’ll tell it over and over through the years. What a wonderful tale of welcoming and leavetaking…yet again. Just saw my freshman son out the door on his way back to college 2nd semester, and thinking how I never get used to saying goodbye with either kid.
What a beautiful name! (for a beautiful baby
)
I’m so glad to know Mom and baby are doing well. I know it must have been hard to come back home but you have your head and computer filled with lots of goodies to look back on and I’m sure your next trip isn’t too far away. Congratulations Elaine!
Laoch – YES, very happy news indeed.

Ottavio – thank you
Peter – thank you for the well wishes. That little baby already captured my heart, I’m going to love being a Grandma.
Beth – Poco is doing well, he and their dog would take off running to the baby’s room each time she cried. They were both so intrigued with this new bundle we were always holding.
Nooner – yes I did and miss that little face. I’ll fly back down in Feb for a visit
Denver Doc - I hear you about the goodbyes, this one was really difficult for me (and her). Good luck to your son in college. I think first year away from home is the hardest for kids.
Kimmy - thanks! They wanted an old fashioned name. I got a new digital camera for Christmas, one that is much easier to operate than my old one so yes I have lots of pictures
Nicely told and a story to tell your new granddaughter to boot. Congratulations on the newest addition to your family.
Oh, that’s a great name…Cora Leigh…magical!
Hi Lainey and congratulations.
I agree, Cora Leigh is a great name. It’s so perfect for when she’s famous…and yes, I had been questioning your whereabouts!
Congratulations–I am sure you will love being a grandma. I know my mother did; as much as she enjoys being a great-grandma. Best of the best for Cora and the entire family.
What a marvelous and exciting story. It’ll be a kick re-telling over the years. Much happiness to all!
