Ban on Obesity

A new bill is being proposed in Mississippi that would ban restaurants from serving obese patrons or those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over a certain limit. Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, is the brainchild of three members of the state’s House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state’s Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi’s Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

If this isn’t the most ridiculous item of the day! This is NOT the way to address the obesity problem our country faces.

Usually the more the government meddles with your life the worse the outcome.

  2. Gandalfe says:

Yes, I think you are right. It’s more about education right?

  3. Jaki says:

    Wow, is this for real?
    It’s makes a statement, that’s for sure
If it makes people talk about the issue then it’s a good thing I think.

  4. Kirk M says:

While they’re at it why don’t they just balance things out a bit by not allowing thin people with a body mass index of less than the minimum norm to ever leave? :P

  5. W. Beth Young says:

How about a bill to ban those that would “eat” away the rights of everyone else? ;) Oh wait…it could be done…don’t vote for them again…lol.

    Laoch – I so agree!
Grandalfe - yes it’s definitely about education. What ever happened to teaching basic health and nutrition in schools starting at grade school level. Do kids nowadays (or their parents) even know what the basic food groups are and the amount they should be eating?
Jaki – thanks for stopping in :-) yes it’s for real but won’t get passed. Talking about the issue as a society is a good thing though.
Kirk – LOL wow you would be eating to your hearts content then. I know very stupid bill these guys tried to introduce.
Beth;-) good point! And with the 2008 election in the US it’s going to get very interesting.

  7. “Sorry, Ma’am, we can’t serve you. You’re too FAT”.

Idiocy. Or a clever way of getting free publicity.

I saw the legislator that introduced this bill on TV giving an interview. He said he didn’t really want or expect it to pass, he just wanted to introduce it to generate discussion about ideas.. I dunno, it made some people mad, maybe he just needed a cover story!
