Cool Picture

Do you ever look at the slideshow of pictures at Reuters’? While reading a news article there today I took a minute to look at the weeks interesting pictures. Here’s a new one for me ~~ a blue frog! Seeing how I am not the most knowledgeable about toads, frogs, lizards and such I found this interesting.

A blue poison dart frog from northern South America is seen in this undated handout photo provided by the National Zoo in Washington D.C. Although most people think of frogs as being green, they actually come in a full spectrum of colors, including cobalt blue like this blue poison dart frog. Most of the more than 100 other species of poison dart frogs are boldly colored and can be found in red, orange, yellow, as well as iridescent polka dots. Scientists believe that these frogs gain their poisons from insects that they eat in the wild

I’ll be going to DC towards the end of April to see the Cherry Blossoms in bloom. Maybe we’ll have time to make it to the National Zoo too.

Definitely come to the zoo and, if you have time, visit the National Geographic Museum, where there’s a whole exhibit about frogs.

Nice photo, it’s my first time to see a blue frog.
That’s great, hope you can make it there.. and please don’t forget to share some photos of animals at the zoo. ;)

National geographic is the best knowledge source even for children. I love the magazine and pictures inside. btw, blue frog is already saved to my computer :) thanks..

    Elaine,

Oh, this is right up my alley! The Poison Dart (or Arrow) Frogs only grow to about 6 centimeters (or 2.362 inches) in length and come in a variety of bright colors, including red, orange, and yellow, often mixed with black patterns. One cute fellow is red and looks like he is wearing blue jeans. The most poisonous is the Golden Dart Frog.

When I was teaching Kindergarten we ordered “RANGER RICK” from the “NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION” for our students to enjoy. The pictures were breathtaking and the interesting facts were entertaining for us all. I personally thought that they inspired my students to have a better love for, and understanding of, nature. Cora may enjoy them when she is a bit older. =)

Thanks for the lovely picture and memories. Hope you do get to see the cherry blossoms and visit the zoo.

Gaby – Thanks! I get to Washington DC pretty frequently so will put that on my list of places to visit. Thanks for stopping in.
    Martin – Will do :-)
Johnrobin – glad you liked the photo. The vividness of the blue is what I find most amazing.
Beth – I remember Ranger Rick when my kids were little. Good suggestion for Cora ;-) Will try to get some good photos to share when I am out there.

Well darn it I had a whole post ready to send and lost it when an error came up. (think I posted in the middle of an upgrade to wordpress lol)
Anywho.. beautiful color on the frog. They’re so tiny too. If you take all the different species of poison dart frogs and put them together in a room, you’ll have a rainbow. lol

I’ve been to the zoo before. It’s well worth it. Hope I can be in a position someday to go again.

  8. Ana says:

Wow, that’s really interesting. I have never seen a blue frog before. Maybe I should watch more National Geographic?!

  9. that is one great picture.. no matter how cool that picture is.. a frog’s a frog.. :)
