John McCain’s Pregnant Pause

When asked about the fairness of insurance companies paying for Viagra but not for birth control, McCain responded, “I certainly do not want to discuss that issue.” McCain was unable to recall that he voted against a 2003 bill that would have required health insurance companies to cover prescription birth control.

From iStockAnalyst:

Health plans that cover drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED) but do not cover prescription birth control, are not only engaging in gender discrimination but also age and economic discrimination. Any form of discrimination in a society boils down to the influential group exerting power and control over another less influential group.

Looks like the Straight Talk Express got delayed.
I never understood this Viagra/birth control discrepancy, but then there is a lot about American health insurance which infuriates me.

I suppose people will eventually realise that keeping their undergarments on and refraining from sex if they don’t want babies, might actually make them happier in the long run.

So much money spent on pseudo-medicine now. If you’ve got a personal problem, medicate it away!

  3. Insurance companies look for their profits. Mccain isnt going to win the election.

I wonder if John is on Viagra. as we all know he is to old and with his health problems able to have sex without help…..of course they should be paying for birth control pills as in the long run it could save them money, not so many people having babies that they will have to insure……..

Sometimes the logic of politicians escapes me; mostly it makes me mad. I suspect the decision is based on evangelical religious lobbying and voters. Ignorance in the name of religion still is ignorance. I guess that makes me a very unpopular guy in many parts of the US. :o (

Cilcious – this entire issue of Insurance companies paying for BC pills has been going for over 30 years. I think Grandalfe nailed it. Now we have pharmacists who do not want to fill a prescription for BC pills..
Tiger Tom – interesting comment. I agree you can’t medicate all problems away but using contraception is being responsible.
Addicted to bags- thanks for stopping in. I surely hope not!
Mary Anne – LOL I love how you say it as you see from the Canadian viewpoint. And yes American insurance companies should be paying for birth control.
Grandalfe – like I said to Cilcious…you nailed this one! Same applies to the pharmacists I mentioned above.
