A U.S. Airways plane came down in the Hudson River off New York City on Thursday, and remained afloat in the frigid waters.
Local media said the plane was an Airbus with 146 passengers and five crew which had just taken off from La Guardia Airport and was trying to return after apparently striking a flock of birds.
More than a dozen people wearing yellow life vests were seen on the wings of the downed plane as it floated in the river, and they were plucked to safety by ferries that surrounded the jet.

I don’t turn the TV on during the day, and I guess somehow missed this on the internet. Been a difficult day. First, despite two brand spanking new remodeled bathrooms, I spent all last night until noon today without a toilet. Something in the lines. They sent a Forrest Gump-type person who finally managed to (apparently, hopefully) fix it. Which meant I didn’t want to have my coffee without a bathroom. I’m getting too old to aim straight into a bucket, which I was forced to do all night. I’m cranky when I don’t get a cup of coffee until 1 p.m! Thanks for filling me in on what’s going on outside my little spot!
Brenda
very scary!
I just read about this. It looks like the pilot did one heck of a job keeping everybody safe.
I was like Brenda, I had no idea what had happened till way after the fact.
I had been at work, got home, walked the dog and a neighbor asked me if I’d heard about the plane crash–no, I hadn’t!
(And here my spouse will be getting on a plane Sunday…)
I congratulate the pilot and other staff on a job well done.
I read about this yesterday. The pilot was an ex-combat pilot who managed to fly the unpowered plane out over the river after the engines were taken out when they were over the Bronx. That’s really something since these airliners have a glide path ratio of just about zip.
Brenda – hope your plumbing issues are resolved today. (yuck)
Laoch – very!
Delmer – the pilot did one hell of a job! I hope if I am ever in that situation I have a pilot like him.
Cilicious – I hear ya….my spouse does quite of flying and I do my fair share. When you hear something like this it’s always reminder I guess.
Kirk – it is amazing! Now a day later and hearing the stories and seeing the pictures of how it went down it’s truly a miracle.
I don’t watch or read the news, but I saw this headline and I was so glad this had such a wondrous ending! It truly was a miracle! Thank goodness!
Love this blog. My first time here. You do wonderful work, and have possibly inspired me. Liz
I’ve heard about this; it’s so wonderful to hear that all passengers were alive…truly a miracle! I think the pilot was awarded as a hero…and I believe he is really a hero…without his skills, the plane would have came down the river in half!
This news made the headline of my local news paper.
Funny that the emergency landing was attributed to the plane colliding with a flock of geese.
On a serious note, Imagine the catastrophe averted by the Resourceful Pilot, kudos to him.
