Mediterranean Diet Aids Aging Brain

Chalk up another endorsement for the so-called Mediterranean diet:med_diet The eating regimen, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil, may help the brain stay sharp into old age, a new study suggests.

Following the healthful diet reduced the risk of getting mild cognitive impairment — marked by forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating. And it also cut the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease if cognitive impairment was already present, said study lead author Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas, an assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.

  2. Dave says:

I need this diet… I keep forgetting things *LOL*

  3. Brenda Kula says:

I think it’s the olive oil.

  4. Keli says:

Fortunately, I’m a big fan of fruits, veggies, salmon and olive oil. So this works for me! I’m sure if a study was done on diet and stupidity, this Med diet would prove beneficial to stupers (short as you know, for effortlessly stupid persons). But alas, they don’t spend too much time on reading and researching.

  5. cilicious says:

That’s basically my diet: fish, vegies, greens, olive oil.
Your photo is in my dinner plate literally every night.
Good to know it’s beneficial to my brain, because I need all the help I can get.

  6. Kirk M says:

Oh yeah! My brain is in dire need of this. Come to think of it, my brain has always needed this. :P

Laoch – You’re welcome, glad you found it useful.
Dave - never too late to start ;-)
Brenda – could be and the lack of the ‘bad fats’ clogging the arteries.
Keli – LOL yes I think they would benefit as well, but somehow I think many would find this diet unappealing. But I’m right there with you and Cilicious…give me salmon and fresh vegetables I’m a happy camper.
Cilicious – Thanks for letting me borrow your photo ;-) That’s the kind of meal I like too.
Kirk – better get on it ;-)

Now that’s a positive twist! It’s good to know this diet, while not only healty and really tasty, can also strengthen your mind. Most world rulers should switch to the Mediterranean Diet, they need all the brain power they can get ;)

  9. Mercola says:

I like the Mediterranean diet because it focuses on fresh vegetables and of course olive oil. But like every other diet, it is no way perfect. We all have individual nutritional type that dictates which foods are healthy for you.
