Obesity can trim 10 years off life

Weighing too much may take as much as a decade off your life, according a new analysis of studies that involved 900,000 people.

Adults who are obese — about 40 or more pounds over a healthy weight — may be cutting about three years off their lives, mostly from heart disease and stroke.

Those who are extremely obese, about 100 or more pounds over a healthy weight, could be shortening their lives by as many as 10 years, the study found. Being extremely obese is similar to the effect of lifelong smoking, says Richard Peto, one of the lead researchers and a professor of medical statistics at Oxford University in England.

I tell myself I need to lose a good five pounds every day. Just makes me hungrier. Any time I’m under stress, which you can count on these days. Then I’m hungry. Unfortunately I inherited the family trait of carrying my weight around my middle. And I know that’s not good.

Brenda – in addition, women as they age tend to gain around the middle, a never ending battle isn’t ?
Keli – It really is sad to observe the overall health and eating habits of so many people. I once had a patient who was 29 years old and had quadruple bypass!!

Apparently, this valuable info is not well known enough among Americans to curb their appetites. I live near a tourist town, and I am constantly reminded when driving thru there of how many obese people there are. They’re usually eating ice cream or pastries when I see them.
