Today is Odd Day. The date is 5/7/09, one of only six this century that will
feature three consecutive odd numbers. The first came a few years ago, when the calendar hit Jan. 3, 2005 – otherwise known as 1/3/05.
The previous stretch of six dates like this started at the beginning of the twentieth century on January 3, 1905 (01/03/05), about thirteen months after the Wright Brothers first successful flight attempt.
We have to ask ourselves whether medicine is to remain a humanitarian and respected profession or a new but depersonalized science in the service of prolonging life rather than diminishing human suffering.
