Many Type 2 Diabetes Patients Morbidly Obese

Twenty percent of Americans with type 2 diabetes are more than 100 pounds overweight (morbidly obese), according to a Loyola University Health System study.

"The rate of morbid obesity among people with diabetes is increasing at a very alarming rate, and this has substantial public health implications," lead author Dr. Holly Kramer said in a news release, United Press International reported.

Brits An analysis of national data showed that 62.4 percent of U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes are obese and 20.7 are morbidly obese, or have a body mass index of more than 40.

Kramer and colleagues also found that morbid obesity among type 2 diabetes patients increased 141 percent from 1976 to 1980 and 2005 to 2006, UPI reported.

The study appears online in the Journal of Diabetes and its Complications.

This I do not believe, I am diabetic and keep my my numbers and my weight under control by the way I eat healthy,( I am not obese or overweight by any means ) how ever I do not live in an area where there is a big mac on every corner, that is what is causing the obese problem here and in the states. BTW I just seen a program on TV this past week, on teenagers who weigh up to half a ton. ( yes you read that right1/2 ton ) all but one died and it is the parents fault for not saying NO enough is enough ) perhaps most of the parents themselves are the blame for their kids death as they also eat at a lot of junk food stores. as in one part of the show the mom says to the kid do you want a piece of pizza and proceeded to give him this large size pizza to eat. they had to be taken to hospital and lifted with a wench. the only one that came out alive was the one who got the personal trainer and nutrionist, and after a few years of hard work he finally lost more than 3/4 of himself.. and after he finally had the excess skin removed he lost another 30 lbs. of excess skin…….was very interesting program and I know Elaine would have liked to have seen that TV program…..it was on the learning Channel which I do not know if you get in the states……. sorry I got away with myself……

I love reading your comments Mary Anne, don’t ever worry about saying too much. You’re right I would have liked to seen the show. It’s so sad to see our youth the future of our world so obese. Who’s going to be left to work when their health fails? Very scary. About type 2 diabetics being morbidly obese it didn’t say all were, just that the percentage of people who are is increasing. I know you’re not and work diligently at following your diet and doing the things you should be doing. So many people don’t though. In Canada you are followed at a Diabetic Clinic correct? I wish the US did something similar.

Yes in Canada we have FREE clinics for diabetics to join and they teach you how to excerise and how to eat. and what to eat. they also check you sugars and can send you for blood work to track you sugar levels for the last 3 months, and work with you on how to get control so that you do not have to take medication……they also give you Free your own tester so that you can test your levels at home….do you not have these in the States????
