You know what I love about summer? It’s the abundance of fresh produce locally grown by our farmers. Be it a grocery store, Farmer’s Market, or vegetable stand down the street there is healthy fresh food all summer. Even the major grocery stores have a section set aside for ‘locally grown.’
The benefits to your community and health are reason enough to shop and buy local. You have superior taste and freshness compared to a product that traveled 1500 miles to reach your table. Locally grown is sold within hours, still full of nutrients and there’s no comparison in taste. It hasn’t been altered by irradiation in order to prolong shelf life. You’re supporting your local economy by keeping funds within your community. Given a choice why would anyone not buy local? Why would anyone buy fake food over real food unless it’s not available to them? The definition of fake food…if it wasn’t around when your Great Grandmother was alive it’s fake food.
Today on my way home stopped at Sofia’s Produce to pick up corn on the cob for dinner tonight. The corn had been picked less than an hour before. Of course I ended up buying more than corn, mouth watering tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, well you get the idea.
Snapped a few pictures with my iPhone, big thanks to Jodi and her collage maker program for combining my pictures into one.

Be kind to your body – feed it real food. Move more, eat less, read labels.

I keep saying we have to stop at our local farmer’s market, which is on I-40 between Winston and Greensboro, just 20 minutes away, and in over a year, I still haven’t stopped! In fairness I’ll say we have a pretty good choice of organically grown produce in several grocery stores close to our house. Still, you are motivating me to check out our farmer’s market!
Thank you!
Oh yes you and Gail should check it out. It’s not just produce they sell but flowers, hand crafted items, baked goods, all sorts of things.
I shop at ours every Saturday, 12 months a year.
That’s nice! Ours will go through October and that’s it till spring. The downside of living in a winter climate.
I just love going out to Apple Annies farm and orchards. Not only is it a fun place to visit but their corn is to die for. So crisp and sweet. Doesn’t even need butter. We were out there a few weeks back to pick some delicious peaches from their orchards and of course we had to bring back 3 dozen ears of corn – one of which went to Pat’s dad. We also brought back some white bell peppers and yellow squash. Just YUMMY! We ended up picking waaay more peaches than we could possibly eat before they turned bad so I sliced them and put them up in the freezer. Looking forward to going out there again this Fall. Elaine, your pictures are just mouth watering!
Leaving a link to Apple Annies if anyone wants to check it out -

You know I’ve never had a white bell pepper, not even sure they grow them up here. We eat a lot of peppers though so I’ll keep my eye out for them. Your Apple Annies Orchard looks like a neat place! They certainly have plenty to offer. Thanks for the link Jodi.
Elaine you are so right on two fronts here, 1st is supporting your local farm fresh grown vegetable and fruit stands nothing taste better then just picked fresh they are so tasty no sauce needed and most are good raw. 2nd like I said once before that every American should watch FOOD INC. that will turn the people into going to their nearest farms and buying from them, especially free range chickens, and beef etc. get a friend or family member to go in on the beef with you and when you are at the farm you will see just how they are grown out in the fields or if they are confined to just eat like in the movie Food Inc.
Today happens to be the Farmer’s Market day near my office. I never miss it! The sights, the smells, the fresh fruit and vegetables. There is nothing like fresh picked! I’m patiently waiting…
