Body mass index, or BMI, is the most common measure of obesity by an individual’s weight relative to his or her height. Evaluating BMI helps determine the severity of an individual’s condition and his or her class of obesity.
underweight: (BMI: below 18.5)
normal weight: (BMI:18.5 – 24.9)
overweight: (BMI: 25.0 – 29.9)
obese: (BMI: 30.0 – 34.9) class I
(35.0 -39.9) class II
Extreme Obesity BMI 40.0+ class III

At 20.9 I seem to be within the norm. First thing normal about me I’ve ever heard of.
Question: If Normal weight is between 18.5 BMI and 24.9 BMI…why is anything below 19.5 considered under weight? shouldn’t that be anything under 18.5? Or perhaps normal weight is between 19.5-24.9 BMI rather than 18.5-24.9 BMI?
Ain’t I picky?
Aren’t you glad you know me?? Huh? Huh?
I was surprised that my BMI wasn’t higher than 22.6 since muscle weighs more than fat!
LOL Even though my BMI is in the normal range, I need to get back to my exercise regiment. I have been neglectful the last couple of weeks. When I don’t exercise regularly I tend to snack more on non-healthy foods.
I believe the 18.5 is a typo and should be 19.5 since the overweight range is 5 points then the normal should be 19.5 making it a 5 point range making the underweight of 19.5 correct.

A couple of things to keep in mind with this calculator, it’s to be used as a guideline only. Women tend to have more body fat than men. Older adults on average tend to have more body fat than younger adults. Highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.
Some life insurance companies are now giving their customers better rates if they maintain a healthy BMI. Keep that in mind next time you update your policy and talk to your agent.
Kirk – yeah you’re picky lol and it is confusing. There are other more detailed guidelines which I will update with
I googled BMI calculator and your correction is right. It is 18.5 for low end of normal and under 18.5 is underweight.
Cool tool! I’m right where I thought I’d be – at the low end of normal weight.
Nice idea to add this to your blog.

I guess I’m slightly overweight. I haven’t eat red meat for a week and rarely have dinner.
I’m planning to buy a treadmill in a few weeks too.
I hope my BMI can drop to 24 or 23 by the end of this year.
